As a Newmarket race day photographer, we cover both of the town’s iconic racecourses throughout the season. From the first fixtures in April through to the final meeting in November, we’re trackside capturing the action that makes Newmarket the headquarters of British horse racing. Our race day photography captures the entire race day experience: the early-morning arrivals, the parade ring, the starting stalls, the race itself, and the winner’s enclosure. Newmarket hosts some of the most prestigious fixtures in the flat racing calendar. We are available for coverage at all of them:
The Craven Meeting (April)
The Craven Meeting is the curtain-raiser of the British flat season. Held over three days from Tuesday to Thursday in mid-April on the Rowley Mile, the fixture has been staged at Newmarket since 1771, making it one of the oldest meetings in the racing calendar. Its 22-race programme features four Group races, including the Group 3 Craven Stakes — a key trial for the 2,000 Guineas — alongside the Group 3 Nell Gwyn Stakes, Earl of Sefton Stakes and Abernant Stakes. With Classic contenders making their seasonal debuts and trainers giving their three-year-olds a long-awaited spin on the turf, the Craven offers the first real glimpse of who might shape the year ahead.
The Cambridgeshire Meeting & Cesarewitch (autumn)
Staged across three days in late September on the Rowley Mile, the Cambridgeshire Meeting marks the start of Newmarket’s autumn programme. Its centrepiece is the Cambridgeshire Handicap — a 1 mile, 1 furlong heritage handicap first run in 1839, which together with October’s Cesarewitch forms the historic “Autumn Double”. With a maximum field of 35, the Cambridgeshire is one of the largest and most thrilling handicap fields in UK racing. The meeting also stages three Group 1 contests — the Cheveley Park Stakes and Middle Park Stakes for two-year-olds, and the Sun Chariot Stakes for fillies and mares — making it a genuine autumn highlight for racegoers, owners and breeders alike.
The Guineas Festival (May)
Held over the first weekend of May on the Rowley Mile, the Guineas Festival is one of the highlights of the entire flat season. Across three days the meeting stages two of British racing’s five Classics — the Group 1 2,000 Guineas for three-year-old colts on Saturday, first run in 1809, and the Group 1 1,000 Guineas for fillies on Sunday, first run in 1814. Both are run over a mile on the Rowley Mile and form the opening leg of the Triple Crown. The Festival draws crowds of 30,000-plus, the world’s leading three-year-olds, and some of the most evocative racing imagery of the year as Classic winners are crowned.
Dubai Future Champions Day (October)
The two-day Dubai Future Champions Festival closes Newmarket’s Rowley Mile season in mid-October, and it is unmistakably a meeting about the stars of tomorrow. Friday is led by the Group 1 bet365 Fillies’ Mile for two-year-old fillies. Saturday delivers the Group 1 Darley Dewhurst Stakes — first run in 1875 and widely regarded as the world’s most prestigious race for two-year-old colts, with a roll of honour that includes Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Frankel, Churchill and City of Troy. The same afternoon stages the Cesarewitch Handicap, the famous 2 mile 2 furlong staying handicap that completes the Autumn Double. Seven Group races across two days, and the year’s last great showcase of equine talent.
The July Festival
A truly summer fixture, the July Festival takes place over three days on Newmarket’s picturesque July Course — a course with a garden-party feel quite distinct from the Rowley Mile’s grandeur. Thursday is Ladies’ Day, headlined by the Group 2 Princess of Wales’s Stakes and the Group 2 July Stakes for two-year-olds. Friday brings the Group 1 Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes for fillies and mares over a mile. The festival reaches its crescendo on Saturday with the Group 1 Darley July Cup — a six-furlong sprint first run in 1876 and considered one of the finest sprint contests in the world. Seven Group races in three days, and an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in British racing.
In total, Newmarket hosts 39 race days across the Rowley Mile and July Course each season, plus numerous trials, gallops mornings, and behind-the-scenes events. Endurance Racing & International Events
Beyond flat racing, we have deep experience in endurance horse racing at the highest international level. In August 2019, we were commissioned by Azizi Developments — a Pillar Partner of the Dubai World Cup — to provide official event photography for the FEI Endurance European Championship at Euston Park, Thetford. Riders from 40 nations competed in what was one of the UK’s most prominent endurance events, held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
Our work at Euston Park led directly to a commission to cover the Toscana Endurance Lifestyle at San Rossore Racecourse in Pisa, Italy, just one month later in September 2019. With 429 horse-rider combinations from 35 nations and a prize purse that broke European endurance records, it was one of the most prestigious endurance events ever staged. We captured the race atmosphere, sponsor branding, and the drama of 120km rides through the stunning San Rossore nature reserve.
This international experience means we understand the unique demands of endurance photography: long courses through varied terrain, changing light conditions, the physical intensity of multi-hour rides, and the need to capture both sporting action and sponsor visibility.
